Colonialism in Africa

•Colonialism is the construction and conserving of colonies in one territory by people that are from a different country.

•It started in 1415 when the Portuguese captured the Moroccan town of Ceutu.

•European powers had a scramble for Africa between 1980 and the start of WWI in 1914.

•All land was claimed as colonies apart from Ethiopia and Liberia.

•The main occupiers were: Belgium, Germany, GB, France, Italy, Portugal and Spain.

Botswana:

•Botswana has maintained a stable, democratic government since 1965.

•The country's diamond resources and strong beef industry have produced a middle-class standard of living for many residents.

Even as Botswana thrives, however it has the second highest rate of HIV infection in Africa (after Swaziland) over a 1/3 of people aged between 15 and 49 are affected.

Neo-colonialism:

•There is now a new dash for land in Africa but not from Europe, this time it is coming from the oil rich gulf states and Asia.

•Saudi Arabia has acquired large parts of Ethiopia.

•Qatar is negotiating to lease 40,000ha in Kenya, in return pledging to build a $3.5billion port.

•UAE have a large part of Sudan, without payment

•India have 0.5 million ha in Madagascar

•South Korea
- Daewoo has leased 1.3 million ha to grow corn (half of Madagascar's agricultural land)
-0.8 million ha in Sudan

•Africa's need for new and better roads, school buildings, computer networks, telecom systems and power generation has opened up a lucrative window of opportunity for Chinese firms.

•China offers "no strings" aid

•Infrastructure rather than top-down products.
