Energy Case Study: UK Energy Mix in 2008

Over 70% oil and gas provides the UK’s energy supply

This is because the UK has large reserves of both

Natural gas use has increased by 85% since 1990

This is because coal use has fallen

Coal use has decreased by 40% since 1990

Mines were shut and moved to cleaner sources eg. Oil and gas

Since the 1970’s consumption of oil increased

This is because the North Sea oil was discovered in 1969

And there was a growing demand for transport fuel

Renewable resources use has increased but still below 6% EU average

Aims to move towards a more sustainable energy supply

Nuclear is at 8%

Coal is at 17%

Oil is at 33%
