Energy Case Study: London Congestion Charge


 

Started in 2003

£8 a day to drive in the Central London Congestion Zone

Cost to the economy of traffic congestion was £2-4 million per week

People should be encouraged to use public transport

Income from the scheme has replaced/upgraded every London Bus

Effects:

Traffic in the zone has fallen by 21%

Bus passengers has increased by 45% and 60% less disruption to bus services

Cyclists have increased by 43%

Road traffic accidents are down by 5%

CO2 and NO2 emissions have decreased by 12%

Retail sales in the area have increased
